Review of 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992) by Rachel C — 17 Aug 2016
Too long and plodding in some areas, with little attempt at character development, the best of which is Michael Wincott's bad guy. Depardieu doesn't have the charisma and persuasiveness of Columbus and anyone less like the very Spanish and religious fanatic warrior queen Isabella than weaver I can't imagine.
Normally I like Ridley Scott's work, but this one is far from his best. Not to mention, Scott makes Columbus out to be a far better man than he was--trying to build a very idealistic New World.
