Review of 24 Hours to Live (2017) by Liam H — 16 May 2018
Strange movie. On the face of it this is a movie I should have enjoyed because I have a soft spot for B rated action flicks. This movie has a lot of hallmarks I would traditionally hope for like gratuitous violence, some gore and a lot of action.
I also like my B action movies to have smart writing where possible and I also don't mind the odd gimmick in the plot as long as it is tounge in cheek or well implemented. This movie had all of those things but there was just something missing.
It had smarter than average writing, it had gratuitous violence but it just had no resonance with the viewer. I think where it fell down is that the hero, Ethan Hawke was not stoic enough. The main character of a B action movie is better if he is stoic, mysterious and has gravitas.
Ethan's character didn't have that. Also the plot was quite cheesy concerning some of the characters back stories and motivation. There was also quite a long gap between the action at the start of the movie and the end of the movie with a big lull in between.
Should have been good but just didn't cut it.
