Review of A Face in the Crowd (1957) by Hardy C — 09 Jul 2012
Somehow I've lived 58 years without seeing this movie. Boy, was I missing something. Andy Griffith, of Mayberry fame, delivers a mesmerizing performance of such fiery populist power and energy that I had to look twice to make sure it was the same actor who portrayed the gentle country constable that I grew up with as a kid.
A prescient movie, born in the birth pangs of television, that forecast the TV demagoguery that the Becks and Limbaughs lampoon with their buffoonery. But neither of those retards have anything on the rock-star charisma of Lonesome Rhodes.
