It might have been better if she stayed because then she would have gotten the normalcy that she would have wanted in time cause He was dying from AIDS. It challenges what you see as family and how and who you choose to love.
Bobby despite his need not to be alone knew what was essential to him. He chose a brother and when he chooses you he is loyal to you as he is with his gay friend despite the fact that he loved his daughter and lover.
..they came later especially since he knew his friend would need him in his dying days. He might not have said anything but he knew. He is hopeful to a fault though wrt the fact that at least Rebecca will come back.
