Review of A Most Violent Year (2014) by Eric H — 20 Jan 2015
A Most Violent Year is exceptional, one of the most atmospheric films in recent memory. It's a slow burn, and definitely not for the impatient viewer, but it may reward patience. The film is very well directed by J.
C. Chandor he has a knack for atmosphere and tone. He gets the best out of his actors. The music is very moody and adds plenty of atmosphere. The editing is also remarkable, once again adding to the atmosphere.
The look of the film is exceptional too, though it is too darkly lit during a few of the night scenes. I couldn't possibly sell the film's atmosphere anymore, it really is something special.Isaac shines as Abel, he channels a young Al Pacino.
Isaac plays the tension, ruthlessness, and fear of Abel with credibility, charisma, and depth. Chastain is wonderful, if only she had more screen time. Chastain is sexy here, the best she's ever looked.
You can wholly believe her character's manipulation, and dedication to the business. Albert Brooks and David Oyelowo, also lend their immense talents to this film as a gangster, and district attorney respectively.
A Most Violent Year will be divisive. The film has an undeniably good cast, the film is beautifully shot, and it has interesting ideas. Before you see the film, realize, it's a slow film, one where words speak louder than actions.
