Review of A Scanner Darkly (2006) by Paul P — 17 Dec 2011
Keanu? Linklater doing a Philip K. Dick novel? Animation? Those things sadly held me up from seeing A Scanner Darkly sooner. Normally Keanu gets old for me. But playing a deep undercover cop, who's addicted to drugs and one of the many side effects is personality disorder oddly is a perfect vehicle for his acting style.
Downey Jr is outstanding, he should've been polishing his supporting actor oscar for this. Woody Harrelson and Rory Cochrane are terrific as well. I loved the animation, a part of me still wants it to be live action but material this bold needed this format to fully work.
And the end of this movie knocked me on my ass. I was so caught off guard by how much sadness I felt when the screen faded to black. Not to mention that epilogue by PKD that Linklater uses, I felt leveled for the next two days.
What a masterpiece!
