Review of A Simple Favor (2018) by Alexander B — 16 Sep 2018
If you like Paul Feig's recent work (Ghostbusters, Spy) then you'll be right at home here. If you think incest and 'brother-f**ker' as key plot points as well as parents and kids saying f**ck to each other for comedic effect is 'fun' you're in the right place.
Tries to be hip, suspenseful and comedic but mostly falls flat. The naive vlog shtick is straight out of a made for TV quality production, not original and not able to decide if it is a comedy element.
For a more enjoyable time watch Nancy Drew (2007) followed by Wild Things (1998) with a Get Shorty (1995) chaser. This film also dabbles in the flashback and non-linear story telling elements - only the audience could see the 'reveals' long before the characters or the flashbacks only showed what we already knew.
For a much better version of this idea including and element that might be a spoiler watch The Prestige (2006). In that way it is much like Ghostbusters (2016) if you thought that brought freshness to the original then you will like this mishmash of ideas done much better elsewhere.
