Review of A Simple Plan (1998) by Paul J — 19 Jul 2015
"Sometimes good people do evil things.".
A Simple Plan is like a cross between Fargo and No Country for Old Men. We see how money corrupts people and how easily evil is allowed in, and once in how it festers. The characters start out as normal country folks, but because they opened themselves up to it, evil takes root and makes them do things that would never have occurred to them in their worst nightmares.
Two brothers and a friend stumble across a wreaked plane in the woods. Inside they find over 4 million dollars and after some arguing between the three, they decide to keep it. On the basis that they sit on it and only divide it up after they know they are safe. A simple plan, but they can't foresee the future. Soon their worlds are turned upside down by a decision.
I didn't expect this to be as good as it was. The cast didn't really appeal to me. I like Billy Bob Thornton, but Bill Paxton and Bridget Fonda normally dull me to death. Thornton was superb. While Paxton and Fonda weren't anything special, they were okay and didn't hurt the film. Sam Raimi, like normal, moves the movie along at a good, slow pace. Patience is a virtue, especially with a movie like this, and that patience pays off in big ways.
