Review of A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) by Vadim D — 18 Aug 2015
A classic deserving its' status, A Streetcar Named Desire, is not only filled with powerful performances, but also with great atmosphere and direction. Sure it can be criticized as over-acting galore, but it's a play, and acting takes center stage here.
So, it's the story and the actors that drive this vehicle. This kind of drama, which might flirty with certain amount of kitsch, is what makes Tennessee Williams such a unique writer. He does not only perfectly capture a specific period and culture of the "great" South, but also conjures an unique world where these characters reside that somehow falls of the map completely.
