Review of A Wrinkle in Time (2018) by Omar L — 08 Apr 2018
I am sure most of the negative reviews come from people whose love for the original novel has blinded them to the really good work Ava DuVernay put on screen. Her emphasis on color (in all senses of the word) makes this movie a visual feast.
What gets lost, however, is any depth or originality to the characters. Reese Witherspoon's Mrs. Whatsit is perhaps the most whimsical, but apart from her, the lack of subtlety leaves much to be desired from older audiences.
Perhaps the least subtle aspect of the film is OPRAH as Mrs.Which, whose literal gigantic presence on screen only serves to magnify the silliness of worshiping at the altar of OPRAH. The visuals are wonderful, and the acting by most everyone is very good (despite the characters not having that much to do in the movie).
With the elimination of a key section from the book, the movie runs *extremely* short, making it seem like there really wasn't that much at stake.
