Review of Abandon (2002) by A C — 21 May 2009
Abandon is directed by an amazing man named Stephen Gaghan, who has a cameo in Alfie's remake, and directed the superb Syriana. Needless to say, he has the talent to carry a film, even if the mentioned film-Abandon in this case- doesn't have the brightest script.
Masks off, I like Abandon. It's just one of those films that I enjoy watching, aware that not all films have/need to be "La Dolce Vita" or "8 1/2". The cinematography and lighting are very ad hoc for the story, with a twist ending that I am sure few people expected.
Katie Holmes is just perfect for the role, because her innocent look combined with moments of extreme confidence makes her a real predator. Charlie Hunnam does a great job here as well, and again, he was perfect for the role, and that means that the casting director did a superb job; couldn't be better.
Life is like a rollercoaster, and the reason why I say this, is because I didn't like Zooey Deschanel here, and her role was very opaque, and look at her now: one of the brightest and most respected actresses in the industry; great for her.
But again, I believe the best thing of Abandon is his director, because I think we are going to hear a lot more about Mr. Gaghan. He's a genious, and I am sure his name will be very big anytime soon.
