Review of Alien³ (1992) by Michael H — 10 Jun 2016
While ALIEN is, at a basic level, an updating of THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD, Ridley Scott got so much right in making ALIEN that it became the apex movie about an apex predator. The pacing is brilliant with a very gradual build as the danger slowly becomes apparent.
The sets are amazing, detailed, believably lived in constructs. The characters are everyday people with their own quirks and concerns. The creature creations are almost always credible and realistic looking.
The few flaws (like the incessant external noise in a movie with a tag-line emphasizing the silence of outer space and a few seconds of less than convincing creature effects a couple of times) are overwhelmed by the overarching brilliance of the movie.
