This classic movie released in 1930 tells the tale of a group of German boys (most hadnâ??t turned 18), who were inspired by the jingoistic exhortations of their teacher to enlist as soldiers in World War I, only to discover that the grimy and gory realities of war are far removed from the visions of heroic rapture that they were led to believe in.

It is also the tale of how a generation of young people perished needlessly, while some of their older fellow citizens, oblivious to their suffering and sacrifice, went about grandiose and delusional machinations for political dominance in Europe.

Even as this movie was hitting the theatres in 1930, the drumbeats were steadily building for another Great War â?? World War II. For fear that this movieâ??s anti-war message would dampen the bellicose public mood, screenings of this movie were sabotaged and banned in many places around the world, including in Nazi Germany.

A beautiful, spectacularly shot movie whose message is relevant even to this day. Must watch.
