Review of All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) by Filmanwalt — 04 Nov 2022
I don't know the original book or previous films. The film is visualized terrifically on Netflix. It takes a lot out of you and has extremely violent scenes.
Blatant war cinematics, which draws on the full in the middle part.
That all sounds pretty good at first, and it is, but ultimately the film wasn't able to convince me. It's well done, no question, but I clearly missed more depth in the characters, maybe more scenes at the beginning as the initial euphoria turns more and more. Ultimately, the fates of the individual characters didn't have the effect I had hoped for.
Acting was pretty good for the most part.
Especially the end part had great tragic moments, e.g. at the hour of the armistice, but also some that didn't convince me so much.
In the end, it's a well-made war film that manages to convey a tragedy, but it just couldn't bind the characters to me as much as I had hoped.
