Review of All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) by Compi24 — 21 Feb 2023
Stark and unwavering in its plight to really nail the thematic backbone of the work its based on, Edward Berger's adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's landmark novel of the same name is not only true to the source material, but better than the 1930 Best Picture winner that came before it.
No disrespect to that film, as it obviously walked so this could run, but we've come so far with technology and the medium in general that it's honestly unfair to really compare the two. Every technical aspect of this film — whether it's the staging, the effects, the cinematography, the editing or sound work — is top notch and nearly flawless.
The performances are all harrowing and raw and the experience, as a whole, is just so rough. Rough, yes, but in the way that it really needs to be. After all, the greatest war films are all truly, emphatically anti-war.
This is unmistakably so. Shall we tack it up as one of the greats? It's got my vote.
