The unlikable characters make this low stakes caper based on actual events difficult to watch at times. It's inter-spliced with interviews of the real life characters which you'd think would make the movie more appealing and dynamic but it just slows it down from it's already sluggish pace.
This film is produced in part by Movie Pass which was involved in spiking positive reviews on RT for Gotti and may have done the same with this one. I only watched American Animals due to the high RT score (88% at the time) and it seemed like it should be in the 60 - 70% range at best.
