Review of American Animals (2018) by Steve H — 30 Aug 2018
With its anodyne title it would be so easy to pass on this thoroughly thought provoking movie. Add to that it's story about a group of students stealing library books. In Kentucky. Like, for real?! But then you'd miss a wonderfully surprising slow motion morality train crash.
It's not another American rahr rah thing at all. This is the heist, deconstructed and analyzed in the real world, seasoned with laughs, melancholy and, most surprisingly, interviews with the real life perpetrators - sprinkled in with just enough regularity to both discomfort and intrigue.
I didn't expect this to be anything more than two hours of escape yet it's the movie I'm still reflecting and chewing on. I guess that the magnetism of the animals in the title.
