Review of Amsterdam (2022) by Compi24 — 18 Oct 2022
Though I can't say it's as bad as a lot of the press has made it out to be, it's very clear that something went wrong somewhere along the road to "Amsterdam." Whether it's the shaky tone, the indulgent and off-kilter approach to the narrative or the lackluster directorial skills on display, there are very clear identifiers of a creator squandering so much money and talent all throughout this.
It's such a shame too, because there's some truly gifted people working in here. Christian Bale, John David Washington, Margot Robbie, Robert De Niro and even Emmanuel Lubezki get moments where their abilities are allowed to glimmer, but because everything feels like it's in service to this muddled and meager vision, no one really shines as much as they deserve to.
Definitely nowhere near as sharp and fun as I think it should have been.
