Review of An Inspector Calls (1954) by Douglas L — 06 Jun 2009
I don't know if it was because I know the themes and some of the events before hand, but this movie is just laughable. It the source material had been more focused on drawing the audience in than wagging its finger at them, then this film could have been excellent, maybe touching 4 stars, but instead I felt completely disconnected laughing at all instance something is soley there to teach you a lesson.
"Ut oh, irony! Foolishness! FORESHADOWING!" This film may well have just put T-shirts on the characters saying what they symbolised, by the end (they did with Eva though). That said the beginning half and the cuts from the source material, such as the line near the end where they actually mention Socialism (I don't know if I should spoil the significance) and changing the inspector's name, are good at building the suspense.
If only it wasn't demolished later on.
