Review of Anatomy of a Murder (1959) by Aditya M — 01 Jan 2019
At 2 hours 40 minutes, this is probably at least half an hour longer than it needed to be, but it's hardly a snoozefest. Jimmy Stewart plays a lawyer who defends a man accused of murder - the man has confessed but says the killing was justfied because the deceased had raped his wife.
I was expecting the classic Stewart - wholesome and upright - but he plays it a bit sly and snarky instead and he is a delight. The film also scores points for the uninhibited manner in which it delves into the details of the alleged crimes, which was bold for a movie in the '50s and attracted much controversy at the time.
A solid courtroom drama.
