Review of Anatomy of a Murder (1959) by Jeff B — 04 Mar 2010
I very much enjoyed this courtroom drama - it was continually engaging and filled with solid performances. It is truly impressive how simple the movie is - most of it takes place in a single courtroom - while still being gripping and intriguing.
My one major problem with this movie is more a reflection of the times than the movie itself. I hated the way that they questioned the rape victim - insulting her, acting as though her clothes and behavior mean that she was asking to be assaulted.
In this more enlightened modern society, we know that it is always the perpetrator's fault, but it was not the case in these previous decades. It angered to me to hear their rough questioning of her, but aside from that, the movie truly is excellent.
