Review of Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) by Jason M — 14 Jul 2018
Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Initial Reaction: Better than Ant-Man and Roach-Woman.
Main Characters.
Scott Lang/Ant-Man, Hope Van Dyne/Wasp: Two Superheroes played by Paul Rudd and Evaneline Lilly.
Dr. Hank Pym: He's a techno wiz. He's played by Michael Douglas.
Ava/Ghost: A shifty lady played by Hannah John-Kamen.
Plot Summary.
Scott is placed under arrest after the events of Civil War. But he just can't stay out for very long because he gets a vision about Hank's wife, Janet.
When Scott tells Hank, Hank think he can bring his wife out of the subatomic realm she's been stuck in for many years. But to do that he, Scott and Hope have to do a few simple tasks and build a really complicated machine.
But things get really complicated when on one simple errand, they run into Ava, a woman who has plans of her own for Janet.
SCORING.
Main Characters.
I like these four a lot. Scott's really good at showing some quirks, Hank's good at being the science guy, Hope's good as the strong woman taking the lead and Ava's good as a woman who just wants a cure for a crippling condition she has. SCORE: 9.
Supporting Cast.
The bad guys are your average bad guys, but Scott's friends show up and liven up the story - most notably is Luis with a really good monologue. SCORE: 8.
Plot.
I like the journey this film takes me through, starting with Scott's vision from Janet to the heroes trying to save Janet to the fights between them and Ava. But it can get a bit complicated with all the science talk. SCORE: 8.
Originality.
Yeah, it's another super hero film, but each Marvel movie has something different about it - and this one has Paul Rudd and Michael Pena (that's Luis) giving a fresh look at a very stale genre: SCORE: 7.
Violence Factor.
There's a lot of fights between our heroes and several average guys and Ava, and there's a bit of destruction - but it is contained in a relatively small amount of space. SCORE: 8.
Other Moral Issues.
This film is about family and teamwork - something seen in so many other superhero films. But the characters really make this work. SCORE: 8.
Final Score (out of 60): 48 % Score: 80%.
I'll never get tired of superhero films - if they're done right. And Marvel knows just how to make them right.
