Review of Any Given Sunday (1999) by Cord M — 29 Nov 2018
An amalgamation of ideas, characters, and pacing, Any Given Sunday breaks clichés and revels in them simultaneously, proving to be one of the most interesting-and frustrating football movies-ever made.
Al Pacino is borderline self-parody, Jamie Foxx gives a standout performance, and each supporting character is swept up in a whirlwind of their narcissism and desires. The film abandons all the character arcs it sets up near the end, attempting to wrap up everything with abrupt changes in personality, relationships, and motivations, feeling tacked on and lazy.
Regardless, it tries harder than most football films, keeping me involved throughout.
