Review of Any Questions for Ben? (2012) by Meredith W — 04 Oct 2012
Watchable, but rather dull film that isn't on par with Working Dogs classic film, The Castle, and the much under-rated The Dish. Maybe they need their films to have two word titles beginning with The....
The film feels unsure of itself at many stages, suffering perhaps in part from the writers being unfamiliar with writing outside the comedy genre (this film is not really a comedy, or not funny enough to be). Remember, these guys gave us the Late Show, Frontline and the 2 films mentioned previously.
The film does have some qualities, with solid performances from most of the cast. The film also creates some good and realistic awkward conversations between characters when they first see each other and don't quite want to talk about things. However, these conversations and situations grow old quite quickly.
The film score is reliant mainly on pop music (much like the Castle) however the songs don't feel suitable and are awkwardly positioned over the scenes. More of a written score would have been better.
It's a shame that they films budget of $11,000,000 is so much more than The Castle, and yet it delivers so much less.
