Review of Apollo 13 (1995) by Luc L — 13 Nov 2010
I wonder if this film was more exciting in 1995. I didn't see it then, but if it was, it hasn't stood the test of time. This is a film that doesn't really get to grips with the story it's telling, neither in the way that it is written nor in the way it has been filmed.
All APOLLO 13 does is rely on the resonance of the actual Apollo 13 mission and hope for the best. Everything is devastatingly competent. What little dramatic tension there is, is overshadowed by the need to get through each story event.
Worst of all, Tom Hanks fails to hold the film together. He goes through all the motions, but ultimately he is just miscast, a case where celebrity and personality overshadows the character being portrayed.
