Review of Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. (2023) by Healingtoolbox — 30 Apr 2023
Plays like Licorice Pizza (2021) with same rambunctious energy yet with more heartfelt humanity. In the early 1970s, prior to women's liberation, the mental-emotional state of three generations of women, grandmother, mother, 11 year-old daughter, coming out of the 1950s-1960s, is accurately documented. My guess is this was green-lighted because Licorice Pizza made some money. Otherwise, from a script development view, for any other kind of narrative, scene after scene "on the nose" about 1970 as time and place becomes BACKDROP for a protagonist who learns something or achieves some inner insight. This story has even less internal movement than even Bob Clarks 1983, A Christmas Story.
At the recent premiere, author Judy Blume said the movie is better than her book. I doubt this will appeal to male viewers much. Probably terrific for a girls-of-any-age night at the movies.
