Review of Asteroid City (2023) by Stroidtoy69 — 09 Jul 2023
It was really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really good. I'm not actually going to do 150 reallys. It was definitely a Wes Anderson movie.
I liked it. Auteur directors used to do “one for me, one for you” in order to secure funding for their movies, they’d make one with mass appeal to get a lot of money for the studios and then do a movie for them which would often be less appealing to the public and earn less money.
I would say Asteroid City was “one for me”. Despite my better instincts, I do like the social fascist Wes Anderson. A tweeness and meta self referentiality so advanced that it becomes a cartoon. A 1950s live action anime.
The perfect film for the era of Bidenomics: a nostalgic portrayal of high modern military Keynesianism and the high point of postwar Broadway theater/stage acting, when American industrial policy could both develop the hydrogen bomb and provide an artistic political economy for Tennessee Williams.
Essentially Wes Anderson doing theodicy. Very very funny.
