Review of Auto Focus (2002) by Richard S — 01 Mar 2009
My memories of the characters in question are far to vivid to buy anyone but DaFoe in the Carpenter role and even he cannot save this lackluster effort. Kinnear always is at an un-viewable angle indicating his lack of knowledge about drumming which was Crane's forte on his old KNX show.
Also, in his character, Crane fumbles with the lyrics to Leon Russell's "If I Were A Carpenter"-- pretty unbelievable for a guy who made most of his living as a morning drive DJ. Better casting may have been Chris Lemmon for Crane who like his father, was at least a musician.
Kinnear is in way over his head and the Director seems to have a penchant for a shaky hand-held camera which in this instance, contributes nothing. This piece is solidly denounced by the Crane Family and rightly so.
