Review of Automata (2014) by Nicholasbert — 30 Oct 2014
Very similar plot to I, Robot and almost identical ending, with the exception of several major plot holes that kind of spoil the view. Not that I, Robot was a masterpiece at all. The psychology of the robot is borrowed here from Asimov's tropes and the usual good-evil diatribe is very tiring; the one thing that stands out is the depiction of yet another post-apocalyptic earth (and we've seen quite a handful of those in the last ten years) with some credibility this time. Visuals are theoretically good, especially those of open spaces, however robots come off as slightly fake. Anyway, you'll almost never see bright colours.
I'm very glad there weren't lots of shootings and explosions, because that would have gotten Automata my lowest mark, 1.
