Review of Autumn Sonata (1978) by Ryan H — 20 Oct 2007
It's rather beyond me to describe how beautiful, compelling and honest this movie is. The strong-fronted but inwardly fragile and stunted Swedish mother played by Ingrid Bergman resonated quite clearly with my own experience of mothering and family.
For me, Ingmar Bergman's films seem to illuminate the Scandinavian tones passed down from my heritage that still can be found within the soul of my North American life.
