Review of Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) by David H — 23 Nov 2018
Rating: Slightly Below Average.
This movie has a lot to live up to coming off of the massive success that was the first Avengers and it didn't succeed in catching the lightning that was the first in a bottle again. To be fair this movie had to set up 3 new characters in the Vision, scarlet witch, and Quicksilver. This movie having to juggle that and Marvels demands in forced in setup for upcoming movies mad this one feel like a trailer for more movies that they wanted you to see. For every scene like the one on the farm we got a scene like Hulk vs the Hulkbuster, a scene with no stakes because it was just mind control and won't have any lasting impact. There are scenes I really do like in this movie, like Captain America vs Ultron, the Avengers trying to lift Thor's hammer, and the opening. But there is so much forced in setup it makes this movie feel sort of meaningless in the terms of the whole universe. Ultron also had to be setup and when they created him in about, what, 5 minutes that wasn't enough. When we look at great villains like Loki and Thanos, we like them so much because they've been given time to develop. Ultron never really has a reason for his actions and makes the movie feel hollow. It feels like an overall meaningless movie in the grand scheme of the Marvel universe.
