Review of Barbie (2023) by Barrywands — 08 Aug 2023
My 11-year-old daughter and I loved it! Barbie's existential crisis was funny and enlightening. It went beyond social commentary on gender to explore themes like death and what a gift it is to experience the whole gamut of human existence vs a predetermined perfect trajectory.
I never played with Barbie so I wasn't sure if this movie was going to do anything for me but I found it a fun celebration of femininity. Those who are saying that this movie is against men, it's not - the point is that when things are out of balance, when people are not allowed to achieve their own potential then society itself loses out.
This imbalance occurred in Barbieland, a fictitious place run by women, and "the real world" primarily run by men. No one is saying the Barbies in Barbieland were bad because they allowed that to happen.
Similarly no one is blaming men in the "real world." It's a natural outcome of the imbalance of power and opportunity.
