Review of Barry Lyndon (1975) by Chris W — 30 Jun 2011
An artistic and creative masterpiece of the highest order, and the work of true master in his prime, Kubrick's "Barry Lyndon" is simply the most stunningly filmed and adeptly made period drama I have ever seen.
The cinematography is very nearly unparalleled, relying on little to no artificial light; and the story is epic in sweep, documenting in vivid detail, the rise and fall of a man who goes from something to nothing, all by the workings of fortune, and loses it all, in much the same manner.
The performances by Ryan O' Neal and Marisa Berenson are powerful and convey the deep sense of anguish and tragedy that undercut the narrative itself. This is one of the most deeply affecting films I've had the privilege of watching, and if I had to tell you at the particular instant, one of the ten best films I've seen.
Masterpiece of the highest order.
