Review of Batman Returns (1992) by Martin N — 09 Mar 2014
Having recently re-watched both Tim Burton Batman's I'm surprised to find myself liking Batman Returns more than the original. I always remembered both being good, but I never thought Batman Returns was better.
Obviously after the success of the first film Tim Burton got a much bigger budget for the sequel which solved the issues with sound and special effects.
I was really surprised by how good Danny de Vito's Penguin was. I definitely prefer his turn as Penguin quite a bit over Jack Nicholson's Joker now. The plot was also a little more substantial. The first film was really more about the Joker and his origins (which is never explained in the comics) more than anything else. Here we have multiple villains with an actual plot and not just random chaos.
The visual darkness, quirky costume design and absurdity of it all is Tim Burton at his best.
I my opinion worth a re-watch if you haven't seen in a while.
