Review of Batman: The Killing Joke (2016) by Max G — 29 Oct 2018

"Batman The Killing Joke" is directed by Sam Liu and is based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore. "Batman The Killing Joke" is my favorite comic and graphic novel, I've read it many times, I take it with me on most vacations, and I've based a lot of villain writing on the joker from this story.

So when I learned there was a movie I immediately bought it. I never watched a review, didn't look at the RT score, I went in blind. Which is why it pains me to say it's not good. First the positives.

They nailed the feel of the joker and how he acted in the past. Mark Hamill gives a wonderful performance as usual (although when he breaks down to his wife it doesn't feel as over the top as I had wished).

The scenery and colors look great especially the rollercoaster scene. Finally, the confrontation between Batman and the joker at the end is handled almost perfectly. Now on to the negatives. The biggest problem is the entire first act.

It doesn't feel finished, the 3-D animation looks atrocious, and it just feels like the only purpose is to elongate the runtime. Also, they say that the first time Batman and Joker met was two years ago and yet Batgirl says she remembers her dad telling her stories about him when she was a child.

She wasn't a child two years ago trust me. She was at most an older teenager. Also, there's a joker musical number. You can't take the most devious, heartless, and most sociopathic villain and give him a musical number expecting us to accept it.

You can't even say, "Oh it's just a popcorn Batman flick" because of how dark and strange the story is. This is not something just playing in the back of a party. If you did the guests would be, disturbed, to say the least.

All in all, a very disappointing movie that has no right being as bad as it is.
