Review of Beau Travail (2000) by Adelmo S — 15 Oct 2008
Nearly a third of my PhD dissertation went to this strange (uncredited) adaptation of Melville's "Billy Budd." Most of my students have hated this film, but it's less a work of narrative than a work of cinematic poetry - something we're not conditioned to "reading," and that's more work than entertainment.
Claire Denis is a master of the cinema of poetry. This is her masterpiece thusfar.
