Review of Before I Wake (2016) by Kelly K — 09 Jul 2018
Perhaps some of the bad reviews come because I'm not exactly sure this is a horror movie. It definitely has intense moments and the occasional jump scare but mostly it is a dark fantasy film. A lot of people said there was bad acting (which I didnt agree with) and a lot of plot points were left unexplored (which I felt were satisfied as best as possible without dragging out the movie), but aside from a few small plot holes (which in such a fanatical movie I feel can be expected) I really loved this film.
The childhood bogeyman genre has been SO done but this found a way to make it fresh, enjoyable and imaginative in a way that leaves you feeling better than you did coming into the movie. I think it has laid a very good foundation for what could he a very interesting franchise and I hope that maybe the director and screenwriter consider letting us see how cody grows into maturity.
Perhaps that would lend itself into a more traditional type horror > over all well executed and I totally recommend.
