Review of Before the Rain (1994) by Helen L — 03 Sep 2010
I give it 4 because I turned it off 1/4 of the way in but read that others absolutely loved it. It is foreign and it is independent, which can often be a bad mix. I hate animal violence and in the first 30 minutes a turtle is put in a ring of fire and a kitten is shot.
I rationalize that the animals weren't harmed but who knows? Beyond that, the sound mixing is awful and distracting and just too much (why directors continue to give lightning flashes in the distance an instant boom of thunder is completely ridiculous, and in this movie, dramatic sounds are used in the most silent of motions).
As I say, it's evidently a great movie but after 30 minutes, I certainly was not moved in the slightest, and the flaws just happened to be ones that really grate on my movie-watching sensibilities.
