Review of Benny & Joon (1993) by Mike S — 27 Jul 2011
Having watched this again for the first time in years it's convinced me that, although Johnny Depp is still an awesome actor, that his best performances were when he was younger. I think it's probably because he gained confidence from his quirky early performances so he developed his eccentricities further as he got older.
This is an early performance and he's brilliant. The slapstick moments are funny because they are, at the same time, an impression of Buster Keaton and a nod to the past, but at the same time he performs it brilliantly and it's simply just funny slapstick.
A romantic tale that's not overly sentimental - focusing more on the 'mental' than the 'senti' you could say. It's simply a really good movie.
And it has The Proclaimers on the soundtrack - it's win, win, win.
