Review of Bernie (2012) by David S — 02 May 2013
Utterly terrible, from start to finish. I like to think of myself as open-minded & with varied taste, but I almost had to pinch myself to take away the sheer pain of this film. Maybe the true story aspect & US media coverage of the actual case has made it more appealing for US audiences? Maybe it would work better as a TV special? Jack Black acting is ok, but I'm really clutching at straws here.
..I just really don't know. I assume the 'comedy' this film is classified as is supposed to be black, but it doesn't even work on that level. I laughed once, hysterically I might add, as I had such a build up of tension from the agony of the movie itself.
So when my Dad laughed at one point, I let it all out! I feel even sorrier for my poor brother, who had to endure a couple with either severe respiratory conditions sat next to him, or simply a lack of self-awareness at sniffling from their cold literally every other second throughout!! Still.
..I will never forget the night itself! Mainly cause of all of the above & the overall feeling of 'what the fcuk is this?', as I waited for a change of pace or any relief from the abject misery this cause myself and the 4 other people I watched this with!! Another positive is that I now have a baseline from which to judge almost all other movies I am ever likely to watch in the cinema - since I tend to select very consistently mainly films that are above average or better.
