Review of Beyond the Lights (2014) by Brandon W — 31 Jan 2016
When I watched the trailers for this, I thought that it looked mediocre that's I'm not going to watch. When my mom saw the trailers, she wanted to see it which is we go see in theaters, I would've been fine and just forget about it.
However, this wand t in theaters as I found out that it is an indie film which in the theater that I go to, doesn't show indie films, so I pretty much forget about it until I found out that this is going to be on Netflix.
I was actually pretty interested in watching this as it has positive reviews from critics and users. Before I watched Beyond the Lights, I didn't really expect anything out of it and just kept it on an open thought, but it was better then I thought to be coming from watching he trailers, especially from a romantic drama film.
Gigi-Mbatha Raw is fantastic in this that I was surprised that she didn't get nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress. Nate Parker is really great, and it's quite the change from him being in an action film like Non-Stop, to a romance drama like this.
The writing is well written, and it never felt sappy or schmaltzy to me. It goes to a fresh perspective of how Hollywood is is for singers and social media. The chemistry between the two main characters is very well done which is something that is rare to see in a drama film.
The score for this is really great it fits well to the film, and it makes me want to listen to some of the songs again. It's unpredictable, and the direction of it flows through pretty good. Beyond the Lights is a fantastic movie that I really need to stop underestimating films these days.
