Review of Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020) by Mcgarto — 18 Jan 2021
To start off I would like to say that at the time of writing I am 19 years old, so I do not have nostalgia for the Bill and Ted movies. I have watched all three movies and can confidently say that this movie was unnecessary, and definitely was not as good as the previous two movies.
There are definitely a FEW funny moments between Bill and Ted, but those are far few in-between. The daughters are not funny whatsoever, and frequently made me cringe. They definitely came off as impersonators of Bill and Ted rather than two new characters expanding on the humor of the series.
What made Bill and Ted great in the first place was that they were just two dorky, airheaded teenagers that somehow came off as charming. Billie and Theodora (daughters) were not charming and came off as trying too hard to be like Bill and Ted, rather than doing their own characters.
The ending was disappointing because it was not Bill and Ted who saved the world but their daughters. The whole point of the first two was that the Wyld Stallyns were going to unite the world with their band's music.
When the daughters save the world, they don't even play instruments. rather they use the equivalent of the real world app "Garage Band" to put together different sounds to make a song, which turned out to be generic and boring.
Maybe they did this because because rock and metal aren't mainstream anymore? I'm not sure, but it definitely does not fit well with the aesthetic of the other two. Overall this is not the worst movie ever, but I think it does the Bill and Ted series a disservice.
Watch it if you must, but don't expect too much.
