Review of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (2016) by Dan G — 11 Nov 2016
For the most part, I like Ang Lee's films, especially when he dives into characters. This film is a conundrum for me. The actors were all very good, but saddled with absolutely terrible dialogue. The 120fps 4K 3D made everything look as bad and phony as THE HOBBIT, but without the visual effects.
Yes you could see every detail and it was incredibly lifelike, but it didn't feel like a movie at all. I get that this was Ang Lee's big "experiment", and I appreciate his effort - the actual halftime show and Iraq battle sequence are well done.
But by giving deference to the technology, the cinematography was flat, the editing slow, and there wasn't enough music to keep the pace flowing. I'm glad I saw it, for the experience, and I think everyone should try to see it this way - as a cautionary tale of the dark alleyway Hollywood might venture down in the future.
