Review of Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014) by Tony G — 01 Oct 2017
It's rare to have such a simple film grab onto you right away and doesn't let go until the end. This highly entertaining and thought provoking piece of art masterfully directed by Alejandro Iñárritu does just that.
Michael Keaton plays an actor in a deep slump after playing a superhero in a series of films in the past. He wants to revitalize his career by writing, directing and starring in a Broadway play. The stress and pressure mounts up from a possible lawsuit, a critic who'll do anything to sabotage his production for the sake of giving the play a scathing review, hiring his friend for a crucial role but is an excruciatingly difficult method actor and his daughter who just left rehab. Keaton's character slowly suffers a melt down.
All the performances are incredible, especially Keaton which got him an Oscar nod. Zach Galiafinakis, Edward Norton and Emma Stone are terrific in their supporting roles. Creative, funny and thought provoking film that's highly recommended.
