Review of Black Book (2006) by Kate K — 31 Aug 2008
I have genuinely no idea how this movie did so well and was not crucified by the critics. I know Verhoven grew up in occupied Holland and you'd think that would give the director some insight into the thoughts and feelings of both occupied and occupier.
Nope. That would involve some depth. What we get here is allo, allo crossed with Top Secret! (That's the spoof) as Germans attack and are mowed down in short order and there are absolutely no consequences - you'd think they'd be a bit miffed and take hostages or something but no.
The problem with films where the heroes are in peril is that you have to care about them - and I physically could not have cared less.
