Review of BlacKkKlansman (2018) by Harsh C — 12 Nov 2018
A fine return to form for Spike Lee, Black Klansman mixes both contemporary issues with a 'So crazy you won't believe it's true' story from the 70s to create a searing indictment of discrimination and hard-wired ignorance.
The movie allows us to become fully invested in the story and characters before things gets serious, and keeps us there for the nearly 2 and a half hour runtime. John David Washington and Adam Driver are a fantastic double team and a brilliant odd couple, and the film wisely avoids the typical pitfalls of the buddy cop genre.
It's a stark reflection of our modern society, one that doesn't seem to be getting any more tolerant or accepting of those who it views as different. The final moments are some of the most shocking I've seen this year.
It definitely lasts about 20 minutes longer than it should, the editing and score are often a little weird and not all of the scenes reach the same high standard, but its still a fantastic movie which is funny, smart and, above all else, important.
