Ugh. This is exactly what happens when they wait 40 years to do a sequel. Just like Tron: Legacy and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the studios are just putting out poorly written "sequels" to make money.
It was hard to follow and the story made no sense.
