The appeal of this movie is your emotional (or even semi-emotional) connection to some of the overplayed (but still really good) music in history. The main actor (Rami from Mr. Robot) does just enough to portray Freddy Mercury as best as he could, but I felt that it was still just a bit too family friendly, and doesn't go down as deep into the rabbit hole as Freddy did in real life.

The film also plays off a very typical narrative of a small music group, that becomes famous, then the main character has an ego trip, and splits off in an emotional drama, yet comes back later for redemption. Furthermore, the timeline was constructed in a way to fit the narrative, and climax with the big concert in the end.

It's still a great movie, but a great movie that needs to be looked at under a more critical light, because it methodically pushes your buttons using your familiar connection to the music, without diving deep into the actually ridiculous lifestyle of Freddy Mercury (imagine lots of drugs, lots of sex, lots more drugs, and a huge amount of debauchery).
