Review of Boston Strangler (2023) by Jluis_001 — 21 Mar 2023
I may give it a superficial reading when comparing it, but its style seemed to me a mix between Zodiac, Mindhunter and a bit of All The President's Man. In tone more than anything else. This by no way suggests that the film can stand on its own, but even with the enormous weight the journalistic investigation plays for the plot, Boston Strangler's focus is more directed towards the work of Loretta McLaughlin and Jean Cole, which is certainly something entirely commendable, but between what it wants to highlight of their work and what it wants to evoke of suspense to heighten the tension, its director doesn't get the balance right but fortunately the remarkable production and the acting work of Keira Knightley and Carrie Coon pulls the film through.
It won't get a lot of attention, but I think it deserves it if you're looking for something to keep you entertained for a while, even if you may well forget it as soon as you finish it.
