Yes, Swank does give a good performance, it's everything else that is stupid. She dresses like a boy due to a "sexual personality disorder", starts hanging around with people who are clearly going to hurt her when they find out, and wants to marry Sevigny.
Lo and behold they find out and the last half hour is rape and murder. It's a really bleak film - true story or not.
